This is my hair... Round brushed only! REALLY!

I just had the Brazilian Blowout put on my hair, and I am obsessed! I was VERY skeptical at first, because I like having curl in my hair and I didn't want it to be permanently straight or damaged. After I saw the end result on someone else, I was impressed. I got online and did some research and decided to try it out. The process takes about an hour and a half or two hours, and you can do it right after a color. It lasts for 12 weeks and the best part is that it is a conditioning treatment that leaves your hair in better condition than when you started! Even if your hair is really damaged, you can still have it done- it actually works better! Now when I blow dry my hair with a round brush it looks like I flatironed it- silky, soft, shiny! If I let it air dry, it has a loose wave and no frizz at all! It still holds curl if i use the curling iron or flat iron, too. It is absolutely unbelievable! I don't know if I can ever go back to my coarse, frizzy hair!

So it looks like a new hair trend is pastel hair, or pastel highlights. This is definitely for someone who wants to stand out! I think if someone were to permanently color their hair like this, they should stick to some streaks that come from underneath... and are easy to cover up when they are over it two weeks later! Best bet? Try some spray on color, or even better, head on over to Sally's and buy some clip in color pieces. Much less commitment!! I promise your hair will be happier!

Ombre' Hair... my new OBSESSION

If you have looked at any fashion magazine lately, chances are you are going to see some ombre hair. It seems like every celeb and model whose hair isn't naturally blonde (read: almost all of them) have been wearing this type of color. It looks as though your summery blonde has naturally grown out, but a lot healthier and glossier. For someone who is naturally pretty dark at the roots, this is a great way to try out some lighter tones in your hair. Rachel Bilson is one of my favorite "ombre" brondes. The best part? So low maintenance!

After I colored Sarah's hair on Tuesday, I couldn't stop looking at it! I was obsessed! She always lets me do whatever I want with her hair, and she didn't bat an eyelash as I piled on the foil. Her hair turned out perfect, and it completely made my day to get to do something new and different. It was inspiring!

Right now, I am pretty obsessed with bangs. Or fringe, if you want to call it that. My instructors at Toni and Guy would get so mad if we said it. "Taylor, say FRINGE!! We don't BANG our clients!!" ha, ha! Well, whatever you wanna call it, this look is hot! Molly always lets me do whatever I want... whether I am inspired by Gwyneth or Lady Gaga. Just kidding! I was inspired by Zooey Deschanel's perfect fringe, and pretty much everything Chloe, and this is what we came up with. Love it!

Hairstylist Taylor Sutton of Dead Swanky in Fayetteville is so sought-after that her hair appointments have to be booked months in advance, but she took time out of her busy schedule to show us her very favorite holiday hairstyles, and explain how to get them too. They’re intended for women of every age and hair length, and are as easy as 1-2-3! So go ahead and try them for this weekend’s holiday bash. We may not have personal hairstylists for our big nights out, but these tricks will have you feeling red carpet ready in no time.

There is little else that can put you in the holiday spirit like getting ready for a holiday party. Whether it’s slipping into that perfect cocktail dress or a new killer pair of heels, getting ready can set the tone for the evening. And having a hairstyle that is simple, chic and easy will only make the evening better! Here are a four of my favorite holiday hairstyles that work on short, medium, or long hair and that are guaranteed to turn heads at any holiday soiree. So grab a some hair tools and a glass of champagne… remember, getting ready is half the fun!

Loose Knot

The prettiest, easiest updo ever. This style looks great on hair that is a bit above the shoulders, but works for all lengths. First, let hair air dry a bit messy. Next, take a curling iron or flat iron and make some random curls throughout your hair, curling away from your face in the front. Tease roots and gather your hair at the nape. Shake your head a bit until some loose pieces fall down around the fringe area and top. Twist the remaining hair and loop around, randomly adding bobby pins. For a smoother knot, pull hair into a low ponytail first, then roll the end of your ponytail up and under the elastic, then secure bobby pins on each side. Use a smoothing pomade to tame any flyaways.

Vintage Waves

This look has been all over the red carpet lately. First, give hair a deep side part. Starting at the nape and working up in sections, curl hair with a 1-inch curling iron, wrapping all curls going the same direction around the head. Next, take a boar bristle paddle brush and brush the curls out, starting at the bottom of the hair and working up. It seems scary, but this gives the smooth, vintage look. Next, tuck hair behind one ear and secure with a bobby pin or sequin hair piece. Using hairspray, smooth down any flyaways and mist over entire style.

Glamorous Ponytail

This look is so easy and stunning. First, blow dry hair smooth with a paddle brush. With a fine-tooth tail comb, tease the crown of the hair. If your hair is especially fine, spray some dry shampoo at the roots for a little more lift and texture. For a sleeker look, comb hair straight back into a ponytail at ear level on the back of your head, being careful not to flatten too much on top. Secure with elastic, and wrap a small piece of hair from underneath the ponytail around the elastic with a bobby pin. If you have fringe, style as usual, then tease the crown and pull hair into a ponytail at the base of your neck. Secure with elastic and wrap hair around. Finish by using a flat iron to smooth the ends of the ponytail and spray with light hairspray.

Holiday Hair Accessories

The holidays are also a perfect time to experiment with hair accessories. A small jeweled clip or feather headband can transform your every day style into an elegant evening look. You can find clip-in hair pieces at your local beauty supply that can add length to a ponytail or a little more hair to your loose knot. The possibilities are endless… have fun trying them all! Blondies and How To Tease!

Both of these gorgeous girls, Karrie and Kim, have really fabulous hair. When they come in, they are very laid back and let me do whatever I want. A hairstylist's dream!

I love doing blonde highlights. These girls both have cool blonde and pale golden highlights, and Kim has a few dark blonde lowlights as well. I like to keep their hair long, but with face framing layers so they can wear their hair wavy or naturally straight.

Also, both of these girls have very silky, fine hair, and I love to tease their hair to give it a little extra oomph!

How to tease your hair:

You need a fine tooth tail comb (see a few posts previous) and hairspray. Take a clip and section off your hair from the temples around. Spray the roots with hairspray. Take vertical sections and backcomb, starting close to the roots, and building up like a ladder. Continue all the way around, then let down the top section. Spray roots again and repeat the backcombing in vertical sections. This way, you get volume on the sides as well as the lift at your crown! Don't forget to check the back to make sure you don't have any wierd holes or backcombing showing... hey, us girls can't give away ALL our secrets, right?!

Easy Party Hair and a cute bob!

My friend Marcy had me fix her hair for her work Christmas party today. She wanted something a little more special than every day hair... so we did this messy side knot. To do yourself:

Tease hair all over, focusing on the crown. Curl all of your hair with a flat iron or 1" curling iron, taking horizontal sections and curling away from your face.

Grab hair on the side you want the messy knot to be. Shake loosely and let some pieces fall around the fringe area. (Careful... you don't want "tendrils"!) Twist hair into a half bun with the ends very loose. Start adding in bobby pins at the base of the knot. Once it is secure, pile up the rest of the curled ends and pin them in randomly. Voila! You can add a brooch or feather clip for an added touch!

The gorgeous bob haircut was done by my friend Sean at Dead Swanky. He is an amazing precision cutter and can cut in a neckline like no other! I had to post this fabulous do. She loved it, of course!

My sweet friend Emily has the best hair. She has had it super long and super short... she can do any hairstyle! We just cut it into this sexy, messy shag on Wednesday. She likes to air dry and wanted something easy, with volume on the sides. If she wants, this hairstyle can be blow-dried into a smooth, sleek, layered look. It is really cute loosely pulled back as well. Thank you, Em, for letting me do whatever I want... a hairdresser's dream!

Stumbled onto these funny pictures online and had to share. Can you imagine if your hairstylist pulled THIS gun on you? I think it may not go over so well... Serious business!

As far as that neon sign goes, I LOVE it! I wish I had one at my house, although it may actually be for something a little more complicated than hair. Taylor said there used to be a topless hair salon in Hot Springs. Now, this is so wrong for so many reasons... I mean, IMAGINE getting a shampoo. Apparently State Board didn't agree that men needed a salon like that and shut it down... that may be an urban legend, but i'll have to look into it!

My client Erika is a lot of fun... she lets me do anything to her hair. A while back, we decided to grow it out from a bleach blonde pixie to long waves. She came in a few days ago and as she was leaving, everyone was commenting on how our hair looked so similar! I guess when I like a hairstyle or color, I want to share it. Long layers and caramel highlights are great for low-maintenance hair. Roots are in, but white hair and dark roots is a little tacky (Jessica Simpson roots, anyone?) So the shaggy layers and fine caramel pieces that get a little lighter towards the end keep your color bright without being "neon" blonde. (Shout out to you, M!)

The Essentials!

Chi Nano hairdryer. My favorite, but Boy Taylor (hubby) prefers a Solano. The Chi is a lot hotter and lighter weight, which is why I like it!

Volumactiv mousse gives a great blowout! It can be mixed with anything to control the volume level or hold.

My favorite product. It can even make course, dry hair feel silky soft and smooth

Ahh, the Chi Turbo. Much debated about, but for me, the only flat iron to use. It gets so hot, and the velvet on the outside allows me to curl with it (it smoothes the hair and you can touch the outside without giving yourself blisters!) I use this every day, all the time. Best thing ever!

1" and 1 1/4" curling irons are a must. I like to wrap the hair around the outside of the iron instead of clamping it in for a more natural curl.

This Shu Uemura brush is amazing. It is like a Mason Pearson brush, but with more surface space, and it is cheaper! It will still cost you around $75, but it is so worth it. They are limited edition, but we still have a few left at Dead Swanky, I believe.

Chi 2" round brush. Love it!

The best teasing comb, in my opinion!

Dry shampoo for prolonging your blowout a day or two (I am always doing this) and for times you need a little extra lift. I know that for you brunettes and redheads, this works but Bumble & Bumble makes dry shampoos in colors.

Hair elastics... love the clear elastics for braids across the front. For runway-smooth ponytails, bungee cords are the best!

A few weeks ago, one of my clients, Alicia, got married at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. The bridal party all got ready at the Crescent Hotel, where we had a suite in the spa to get ready in. I did all the bridesmaid's hair, and of course, the bride's lovely hair! She wanted something pretty and simple. She was a beautiful bride! Strut For A Mutt was last Friday at Savor. Several hairstylists from Dead Swanky and Studio 8 created some fabulous looks for the runway models. We did the "Zoe" which was a low messy bun with beachy waves and fishtail braids. Everyone looked incredible and the evening was a HUGE success! Samantha Ronson was the DJ at the after party. Hair Extensions!

My friend Stephanie is getting married in the spring. She has fine hair naturally, and we wanted to do a fuller look for her wedding. We thought we might as well go ahead and get the extensions now so she could enjoy them for all of the pre-event festivities. We matched her color and ordered the extensions, which are human hair. Sounds creepy, but they are the best. You can cut, color, curl, straighten, shampoo and blowdry these extensions. I recommend the clip in kind, because bonded in extensions can sometimes break your hair. If you don't mind the maintenance, bonded in extensions are great. For a more low maintenance extension look, the clip ins are the way to go, since you don't have to deal with them every day. The clip ins are a lot more affordable as well! These extensions turned out great after we cut and curled them a bit! They are a great way to change up your look with very little commitment!

Kerastase & Shu Uemura Class

New Oleo Relax Slim... for dry and rebellious hair. The treatment reduces the actual volume of the hair for up to 10 shampoos. The cream does the same!

Volumorphose treatment. Yes, you guessed it... a VOLUMIZING treatment!! Finally!

It is the exact opposite of the product above. The product penetrates the hair and is activated by water, so every time you wash it it is reactivated. Lasts up to 10 shampoos.

Chroma Thermique... our third heat activated styling creme. This one is specifically for shine and locking in and protecting color treated hair. The Chroma line has the Fibrionic Systeme, which makes a fiber-mesh over each hair that protects the color and helps light bounce off of it, and each hair reflect off of each other.

Sublimateur Jour is basically the "hand lotion" for your hair. You can use it before blowdrying, and then throughout the day as your ends need it. It is not a "styling creme" but more of a leave in. It is completely weightless!

Frame Wax... ultimate hold for short hair

We just got in a new serum called Essence Absolue- "liquid gold" It repairs and smoothes any type of hair. It is completely weightless and you can use it as a pre-shampoo treatment and protector during a color treatment. AMAZING! I am addicted!

We also received a new paste called Cotton Uzu with cotton fibers in it- similar to Manipulator but more moveability, and we got a new lightweight styling cream that gives texture. It has black rock sugar crystals in it- a delicacy in Japan. These products are so new I couldn't even find info online about them!!

Last night our Kerastase trainer came from Florida to teach us about our new products. We launched new products from both Kerastase and Shu Uemura. It is so nice to get to have a class to learn about each product individually, because they are all very specific for certain types of hair! After our class, we went to Theo's to "debrief"!

As you know, my brother in law Brett is one of the stylists at Shag salon. We all love everyone at that salon! They finally outgrew their old location and moved to an amazing spot on Block St. a little closer to Dickson. They will be sharing their building with Minx Boutique from Little Rock!! Whitney Moseley is the owner, and she is fabulous. Her store will be opening sometime in August, and I can't wait! At the grand opening, they also featured jewelry from Taken by Betsy Bradberry, which you can also find at Lola! I had a great time at the grand opening of the salon! I just love local businesses! Congratulations to everyone involved!

Brittany is one of my girls who drives all the way from Russellville to get her hair done! She is pretty blonde naturally, so we do several colors of blonde to give her hair dimension.

Laura is a natural redhead, but sometimes I put a gloss on it to darken it up a bit... she tends to go blonder naturally! Her hair is VERY thick, so we do lots of layers so she can keep it long. Gorgeous!

Susan has even thicker hair than Laura's! She is also a natural redhead, but we brightened her up a lot for the summer with some very blonde highlights.

Leslie just let me color her hair "bombshell blonde"... I think it turned out so pretty!

Alicia loves dimension, so we get to do some fun color on her. The contrast of the lowlights to the blonde is so much fun! Also love her sideswept fringe!

Brandy lets me do whatever I want to her hair- a hairdresser's dream! We darkened it, took several inches off, and added a thick, straight down fringe. I can't wait to see what we decide to do next time! She rocks!

Sarah has pretty blonde hair naturally, so we do some very light highlights to brighten her up. We did a little braid across the front to try something different for her! I did the braid on the outside so it would look like a headband.

Here is Quynh and baby Liam (I haven't cut his hair yet, that is Boy Taylor's department!) Her hair has grown out a little here, but she has a fun cut so I had to post it. Her hair used to be down to her waist!

This is my fabulous cousin Jenny's hair! We always get to do something fun... she is naturally light brown but we took her to a glossy dark brown and did a very layered bob! The last hair cut was one length, so this was a big change! She loved it!

The always FABulous Tara! I wish I could claim that gorgeous color, but it is all natural! I can claim the long layers, though! She is so good about fixing it every day, so she is great advertisement for me!

My friend Amy's daughter Holly, who just graduated from high school! She also has color that is naturally gorgeous. She wears her hair naturally curly about 99% of the time, so I gave her a cut that had long layers that blended in so it works straight or curly.

Here are some of the lovely ladies I have styled recently. I have been a bad hair blogger, but I will try to do better! I am always working on Stella's stuff, or relaxing after work! We have been very busy at the shop... we have been doing our regular clientele, but we have also done a few fashion shows recently. Dead Swanky was the only salon who did the hair for the LIVE UNITED Mason's Fashion Show, which was great! Then, last week, Dead Swanky along with Studio 8 did all the hair for Rock The Runway! It was at the Botanical Gardens. I will try to get some pictures of both events to post. Hope everyone has a great day!

A great way to spice up the hairstyle you already have is to try adding a braid. This works on almost any hair length. It is also a great way to squeeze one more day out of your blowout! If you are not too sure about the braids, first try out some tiny ones like Blake Lively's. Start with a pencil-size section of hair about an inch or two away from your face in the part. lift away from the rest of the hair and braid. Secure with a clear or rubber elastic. This looks very cute when you pile the rest of your hair in a messy bun, too. If you know how to french braid, try doing a braid across the front of your hair like Hayden Panettiere. Start with a deep part, and section the hair from the hairline to about 1 and 1/2 inch away from hairline. I prefer to braid "inside out" so you get a raised braid, almost like a cornrow. Secure behind your ear with an elastic. Sometimes it is easier to braid towel dried hair to keep it smooth. Start with a light styling cream, do the braid, then let the rest of the hair air dry. When it is dry, take a curling iron or flat iron and spiral some loose waves onto the top layer of your hair. Don't worry about it being too perfect, a little messiness is a good thing. And.... Voila! Gorgeous, stylish hair with little effort!

These are some hair styles from the last few days... as you can see, I love the long bobs and the long waves! Also, I put some pictures of the salon up, along with some pictures of our amazing product lines... Kerastase and Shu Uemura. They are amazing products. Kerastase is all about healthy hair- we have a full line of treatments to repair anything from dandruff, to breakage, to volumizing! These products really make a difference if your hair is damaged or dry. Once you use them, you are usually hooked!

In November of last year, we were invited New York City to a once-in-a-lifetime Master Styling Class with Orlando Pita. He has always been an inspiration to me, so the chance to take a class with him was amazing! The class was held at a salon called Butterfly Studio on 5th avenue. It was a very small class, only about 20 people, from all over the country. We got to sit down and ask him any questions we could think of, from hair tips to celebrity client gossip. He was cracking us up with stories about Amy Winehouse being so messed up she could barely function (with some pretty ratty hairpieces) and trying to force him to go crazy with her bouffant (he didn't!), and how Gwyneth Paltrow would never let him cut her hair. She would say, "Oh, I have to keep it long for the film I am working on" and then when he saw the movie, she wore a wig the whole time! (Iron Man, of course) Obviously, she let him cut it and the rest is history! He also talked about how T3 developed a special waving iron because of the way he started styling Madonna's hair. After that, we got to see him demonstrate styles from the Giambattista Valli and Dior runways and then we got to replicate them on models with his one-on-one help. It was the greatest experience! I was so lucky to be a part of it, and I hope to have more experiences like that in the future. I may not really do "runway" hair every day, but I learned some great tricks to use for making "real life" hair fabulous!

I love to find new inspirations for hair, and I love to help my friends learn how to duplicate salon styles on themselves. I think a great haircut can give you so much self confidence, and it can make an outfit. It can frame your face and let people know your style. The Long Bob

My favorite haircut right now is the long bob, or "Lob". A lot of you guys got the now infamous Posh Bob and have been growing it out since. I love this haircut because you can have a style while also enjoying the benefits of a longer haircut. This length can still fit into a tiny ponytail for those times when you don't feel like fixing it, or when you run to the gym. But when it is fixed, it is so chic and glamorous! You can show off the shape of the cut when you straighten it, or add some soft curls for a messy, romantic look. Either way, it is a great style... and cutting a few inches off always makes your hair look so much healthier!
